Fish Kulambu is a well-known South Indian curry that features tamarind and coconut as its key ingredients.

    1. Health Benefits of Fish

Fish is a high-quality protein that is low in fat. It contains omega-3 fatty acids and important vitamins like D and B2 (riboflavin).

Fish is also a good source of calcium and phosphorus, along with minerals such as iron, zinc, iodine, magnesium, and potassium.

The American Heart Association suggests eating fish at least twice a week for a healthy diet.

It is rich in protein, vitamins, and nutrients that can help lower blood pressure and decrease the risk of heart attacks or strokes.

    2. Improves Brain Health

Fish contain a lot of omega fatty acids, which are a type of healthy fat. These fats play a crucial role in keeping our brains healthy.

When people have low levels of omega-3 fatty acids in their blood, it can lead to faster brain aging, resulting in issues like memory loss and problems with thinking.

Research shows that not having enough omega fatty acids is also associated with the shrinking of the brain as we get older.

    3. Reduced Chance of Heart Disease

Omega fatty acids are linked to a decreased chance of heart disease. Regular intake of omega-3 fatty acids seems to help in preventing and lowering the risk of coronary heart disease.

These fatty acids work by reducing plaque in the arteries, lowering triglyceride levels, and may even assist in lowering blood pressure.

    • Soak the tamarind in water for about 15 minutes before making fish kulambu. Clean the fish completely and keep it aside.

    • Next, place a clay pot on the stove and heat it. Once it is hot, add sesame oil and heat it.

    • After that, add mustard seeds, fenugreek, and urad dal in the sesame oil and sauté it. Wait for the mustard seeds to pop completely.

    • Next, add in 50g of small onions and 50g of garlic into the sesame oil and sauté them. When the onion turns glassy, add the green chilies and a few curry leaves.

    • Add the tomatoes to the mixture and sauté them nicely. The tomatoes should cook completely until they become soft.

    • When the tomatoes are soft, add the raw mango and sauté. Adding raw mango is completely optional.

    • If you are adding raw mango to fish kulambu, adjust the quantity of the tamarind accordingly. Otherwise, the dish will taste too sour.

    • Next, mix in the ground masala and tamarind water. Stir well. Add salt as needed.

    • Let everything boil together until the raw smell of the masala and tamarind disappears.

    • Boil the mixture for 10 minutes, then carefully add the cleaned fish.

    • Let the fish cook for 5 minutes over medium heat.

    • Finally, mix in 2 spoons of coconut oil and a sprig of curry leaves into the fish kulambu and give it a good stir.

    • Let the fish kulambu be on medium flame for another 2 minutes and release the oil. After 2 minutes, turn off the stove.
