    Required Ingredients for Crab Pepper Masala


    Crab - 1 kg

    Onion - 4 pieces

    Tomato - 2 pieces

    Coconut - 100g

    Ginger-garlic Paste - 2 teaspoons

    Cumin seeds - 2 teaspoons

    Fennel seeds - 2 teaspoons

    Pepper Powder - 3 teaspoons

    Chilli powder- 1 teaspoon

    Coriander powder- 1 teaspoon

    Garam masala powder - 1 teaspoon

    Turmeric powder - ½ teaspoon

    Salt - As required

    Cooking oil - 5 teaspoons

    Ghee - 1 teaspoon


    Procedure for Making Crab Pepper Masala


    There are lots of different types of crabs out there. Personally, I really enjoy using Blue Crab and Mud Crab for this recipe.


    Choosing the right crab is super important; it's best to go for larger crabs since they have more meat to enjoy.


    Today, I'm going to prepare this dish using Blue Crab.

    • First, make sure to clean the crab thoroughly and set it aside. Next, finely chop the onions and tomatoes and keep them ready.


    • In a mixer grinder, combine coconut, cumin seeds, and fennel seeds, then blend them into a paste. You can add a little water to help with the blending and set that aside too.


    • To get started, take a large nonstick pan and place it on the stove to heat up.


    • Once it's hot, pour in about 5 teaspoons of cooking oil. When the oil is heated, add the finely chopped onions and sauté them until they’re nicely cooked.


    • When the onions turn a light golden colour, toss in the chopped tomatoes. Cook them until they become soft and mushy.


    • Next, add the ginger-garlic paste to the pan and sauté it until the raw smell disappears.


    • Then, mix in turmeric powder, chilli powder, coriander powder, garam masala, and a teaspoon of pepper powder. Sauté this mixture for about a minute.


    • After that, add the coconut paste we made earlier into the pan. Pour in enough water so that the crabs can be submerged in the gravy.


    • Once the gravy starts to boil, add the crabs and let them cook.

    Last Few Steps for Making Crab Pepper Masala


    • This step is very important because cooking the crabs in the masala allows all those delicious flavours to seep into the meat.


    • Cook the crabs in the gravy for around 3 minutes. The Blue Crabs will turn a bright red when they’re done.

    • Be careful not to cook them for more than 3 minutes, or the meat can become overcooked and mushy.


    • After 3 minutes, take the crabs out of the gravy and transfer them to a bowl, setting them aside.

    • Once you transfer the crabs, let the gravy boil until it thickens to a paste-like consistency. When it reaches this stage, add the crabs back into the kadai and sauté for a minute.


    • Next, sprinkle in 2 teaspoons of pepper powder and a teaspoon of ghee over the crabs. Mix well to ensure the pepper is evenly distributed. Then, turn off the stove.
