Information about Sweet Pidi Kozhukattai and Uppu Kozhukattai

Kozhukattai is a traditional snack from South India, made with rice flour dough and different fillings.

Its history goes back to ancient times, and it has been enjoyed in South Indian cuisine for many years. This dish is known to be a favourite of Lord Ganesha, a highly revered god in Hinduism.

According to tradition, his mother, Goddess Parvati, created kozhukattai as a special treat for him. Today, kozhukattai is an important part of many Hindu celebrations, particularly during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival.

There are several Kozhukattai varieties, like Sweet Purana Kozhukattai (Mothagam), Paal Kozhukattai, Thengai Purana Kozhukattai, Ulunthu Kozhukattai, Ellu Kozhukattai, Uppu Kozhukattai, Avaiyar Kozhukattai, etc.

Among these varieties, we are going to make both sweet pidi kozhukattai and uppu kozhukattai. Pidi means 'to hold' in Tamil. It usually refers to a type of sweet made by pressing rice flour in your hands to form a shape.

That's why it's called pidi kozhukattai. Personally, I prefer the sweet version over the savoury one. Trust me, it's very easy to make. You can also serve it as a snack for kids.

It's great if you have homemade rice flour, but you can also try it with store-bought idiyappam flour; it works well too.

Today, instead of using rice flour to make sweet kozhukattai, we are going to use whole wheat flour. This sweet pidi kozhukattai will taste excellent than the usual sweet pidi kozhukattai that we make using rice flour.

    Required Ingredients for Kozhukattai

    1. For Making Sweet Pidi Kozhukattai

    Whole wheat flour - 250g

    Sugar or Jaggery - 100g

    Chopped Coconut - 100g

    Salt - one pinch

    Ghee - 3 teaspoons

    2. For Making Uppu Kozhukattai

    Rice Flour- 200g

    Onion - 2

    Curry leaves - 3 sprigs

    Coriander leaves - one handful

    Mustard seeds - 1 teaspoon

    Urad dal - 1 teaspoon

Bengal gram (Kadalai paruppu) - 3 teaspoons

    Green chilli - 1 piece

    Oil - 2 teaspoons

    Cashew nuts - 10 pieces

    Ghee - 1 teaspoon

Procedure for Making Sweet Pidi Kozhukattai

    • First take a wide mixing bowl, add in the whole wheat flour, small chopped coconut, sugar, one teaspoon of ghee, and a pinch of salt.

    • This dough will be in a little sticky consistency because we have added sugar and wheat flour. If we use rice flour, this sticky consistency will not be there.

    • Applying ghee to our hands while making kozhukattai will prevent the dough from sticking.

    • Rub some ghee on your hand and shape the dough into Pidi Kozhukattai.

    • Now, take a steaming plate and grease it with some ghee. So that the Kozhukattai will not stick on the plate.

    • Now, place all the sweet pidi kozhukattais on the steamer plate carefully.

    • Then, take a steamer or an idly-making pot. Place them on the stove and heat it. Once it is hot, pour the required amount of water into the steamer.

    • Roast the urad dal and Bengal gram on low flame till they reach a golden red colour. After that, add in the chopped onions and sauté them until they become glassy.

    • Then add in the chopped curry leaves, green chilli, coriander leaves, and some salt into the frying pan and sauté them for a minute. If you want, you can also add grated carrots and coconut into this mixture.

    • Then turn off the stove and keep this mixture aside.

    • Now, take a wide mixing bowl. Add in the rice flour and sprinkle some salt into it and mix them completely.

    • Now, add hot water little by little to the rice flour mixture until it reaches Kozhukattai dough consistency.

    • Now again heat the frying pan and add one teaspoon of ghee into it.

    • Once the ghee becomes warm, add in the cashews and sauté them until they become golden in colour.
