Remove Copyright Claim on YouTube |
What is Copyright Claim
When we upload a video that uses any audio files, like movie songs/music, album songs/music, we may face a Copyright Claim issue.
The YouTube team will inform us about this through email. We will also receive a notification in YouTube Studio.
Additionally, there will be a red dollar symbol next to the uploaded video.
If a video is eligible to earn money without any issues, it will show a green dollar symbol.
If there are only limited ads available, it will display a yellow dollar symbol.
This way, we can easily understand if we have used audio that leads to a Copyright Claim.
A Copyright Claim happens when we use someone else's audio files without their permission; the owner of that music/song can file a copyright claim against us.
As a result, any revenue generated from that video will go to the owner instead of us.
This will not affect our channel or that video in any way. We will not receive any revenue from that video.
When we upload copyright claim videos more than a limit, thinking that we only need subscribers and not money, there is a chance we won't get monetization at all.
If it is a shorts video, we will earn from YouTube's revenue sharing. This means the revenue from that video will be divided between the song owner and the creator.
So, if there is a copyright claim on a shorts video, it is not a problem.
It's important to understand that a copyright claim is different from a copyright strike.
If we face a copyright claim issue in our video, we can remove the claimed material.
By doing so, the revenue will only come to us. So, let's see how to remove Copyright Claim if it appears in our video.

Copyright claim notification |
We can fix the copyright claim issue by either removing the music or song or by replacing it with a different one.
By doing this we can remove copyright claim.
- First, open our channel's YouTube Studio through the browser. You will see a copyright claim notification there.
- Click the button that says "View options" in the notification.
- Next, a window will open showing video copyright details.

Copyright claim details |
- In that, we will have information about which song or music we used from others and the time duration we used it for.
- You need to click on the "select action" button. In that, you'll see four options. Erase song, Replace song, Dispute and Trim out segment.

Options to remove copyright claim |
Using these four options, we can remove copyright claim.
1. Erase Song
- The Erase song option allows you to delete only the claimed song within a specific time duration.

Erase song |
- With this option, we can keep the verbal communication (conversation) while removing just the background music or song.
- Alternatively, we can mute all sounds during that time duration.
- When you click here, you will see two options, Erase song (which removes the claimed song from all detected segments while keeping other sounds such as speech) and Mute all sound in the claimed segments.
- You need to select the option you want and then click save.
- Once that's done, the video will be processed, and within a few minutes, the copyright claim content will be removed.
2. Replace Song
- By using the Replace Song option, you can remove the copyright claim material by replacing the song and adding different music in its place.

Replace claimed material |
- You can only add music from the YouTube library, which is completely free.
- You need to click on Replace Song, choose the specific YouTube library music, add it, and then save it.
- Now, the copyright claim material will be erased, and the music in the YouTube library will be added. The copyright claim issue will be removed.
3. Dispute
- If a copyright claim is made by mistake, you can choose this option.

Dispute Copyright Claim |
- You can provide details like it is original content, we have a license for this music, or we used it fairly to dispute the claim.
4. Trim out Segment
- You can use this option to edit copyright claim material and trim out the specific time duration.
- This way, only the copyright-claimed video material will be cut and removed.
- That's it! If a copyright claim issue arises, we can remove it using these above 4 methods.
- Then, the revenue from that video will come only to us. The dollar icon next to the posted video will change from red to green.
Information about Copyright Strike
Like I said first, a copyright claim is different from a copyright strike.
If you take your own video and copy a background audio file to upload, you will get a copyright claim.
However, if you copy someone else's video visuals along with their audio and upload it, you will receive a copyright strike.
We can remove copyright claim, but if we get a copyright strike, we have to talk to the owner who issued it to get it removed. You received an email with the copyright owner's details.
You can also check the details of the video that got the copyright strike on your YouTube Studio page. This way, you can contact them via email.
If it is not so, we must wait until the strike expires. The strike lasts for 3 months. If we get 3 strikes within those 3 months, our channel will be terminated.
So, it is better not to upload the other person's video. You can "Fair use" someone's video, but still it can be risky.
When you upload a video, it’s really important that you must include your own work.
Even if you use just 1 or 2 seconds of someone else's video clip, the original owner can still give you a copyright strike if they want.
If you have a copyright strike on your channel, you cannot apply for monetization. You must wait until that strike expires.
Information about Community Strike
YouTube has community guidelines. If we upload videos that break these rules, we can get an automatic community strike.
Anyone can also report videos and give a community strike. So, make sure to read and understand the YouTube community guidelines fully.
When someone reports a video, a strike won't happen immediately. The YouTube team will thoroughly check the reported video.
A community strike will only be issued if it goes against YouTube's policies. Otherwise, there won't be any issues.
If someone talks badly about another person, shares their private matters, or shares their photo, the affected person can report it and get a community strike.
Even if there is a community strike, we cannot apply for monetization.
After getting monetization, if we receive 1 or 2 strikes, we may not be able to upload videos for a few days. If we get 3 strikes within 3 months, the channel will be terminated.
Therefore, you need to be very careful about Copyright Strikes or Community Strikes.
